Mass Text Messaging
& How to Send a
Mass Text
What Is Mass Texting?
Mass texting means sending one text message to a large list of people at the same time from a business texting platform. Each person gets the message as a private text from your business number. Recipients don't see each other's numbers, and anyone can reply STOP to opt out.
Businesses use mass texts for news people need to see quickly: sales and coupons, order updates, appointment reminders, event changes, and urgent alerts. Churches, schools, and nonprofits use them too.
It works because people read texts fast. EZ Texting's 2026 Consumer Texting Behavior Report surveyed 959 U.S. consumers. It found that:
- 72% read a business text within 5 minutes, and 87% within 15 minutes.
- 89% have signed up to get texts from at least one business.
- Only 24% get 6 or more business texts a day. By comparison, 54% get 6 or more business emails a day.

Benefits of Mass Texting
Reach Your Whole List in Minutes
One message goes to everyone on your list at once, and most people see it within 15 minutes. That makes texting a good fit for news that can't wait, like a closing, a flash sale, or a schedule change.
Send the Right Message to Each Group
Sort contacts into groups and text only the people a message is for. Ohio Technical College groups its contacts this way, so a message meant only for welding students reaches only welding students.
Personalize Every Text
Add each contact's first name or other details to the message automatically. In the 2026 survey, only 9% of consumers said they prefer generic messages. For campaign ideas, see our complete guide to SMS marketing campaigns.
Add Images That Get Clicks
A text can include a photo, coupon, or GIF. 64% of consumers say they are more likely to click or buy when a promotional text includes an image.
Get Replies Back
People can text you back, and they expect a quick answer: 70% expect a business to reply within an hour. Replies land in a shared inbox, so your team can answer from one place.
What a Mass Texting Platform Adds
A texting platform sends each person a private copy from your business number. When someone replies STOP, EZ Texting removes them from future messages automatically with SafeSTOP®. You can also draft messages faster with AI Compose, which adjusts tone and length and translates between six languages.
Charleston Animal Society sends targeted texts with images to its donors and adopters. During its annual car raffle, one text can bring in up to $18,000 in ticket sales in a single day.
"(Texting) is by far our number one ROI. When we send a text, it's a special day because, boom, we know we're gonna raise between $4,000 and $18,000."
Dan Krosse, Media Marketing Consultant, Charleston Animal Society
How to Send Mass Text Messages
To send a mass text, sign up for a business texting platform and upload contacts who agreed to get your texts. Then write one message and send it to your whole list or to one group. Here is how it works in EZ Texting:
- Start a free trial. Sign up and pick your business number.
- Register your number. U.S. carriers require businesses to register local numbers for app-to-person (A2P) texting through The Campaign Registry. EZ Texting walks you through 10DLC registration.
- Add your contacts. Upload a CSV file or sync contacts from apps like HubSpot or Mailchimp. Only add people who agreed to get texts from you.
- Sort contacts into groups. For example: customers, staff, or event guests.
- Write your message. Start with your business name. A text message (SMS) can be up to 160 characters and uses 1 credit. A picture message (MMS) can be up to 1,600 characters and uses up to 3 credits.
- Choose when to send. Pick Send Now, Schedule for Later, or Schedule Recurring.
- Review and send. Click Review Message, check it, and send. Then see deliveries, clicks, and opt-outs in Reports.
"My favorite thing about EZ Texting is that it is easy. I am not technology savvy at all. I'm able to go on, I usually use my desktop, and pull up our groups. I can send that text message out very, very quickly."
Bonnie LaCorte, VP Student Engagement, Ohio Technical College

Do I Need Special Software to Send Mass Texts?
Yes, if you text more than a few people for your business. A group chat from your phone shows everyone the other numbers, and every reply goes to the whole group. Google Voice group texts also top out at 8 people. Your phone doesn't track who opted out, either. A texting platform sends private texts from a registered business number and keeps your opt-out list for you.

Contact List Management for Mass Texting
Upload contacts with a CSV template or sync them from tools like HubSpot and Mailchimp. Then segment them by interest, past purchase, or location, so each text reaches the people it is meant for.
Segments also help you avoid sending the same person the same message twice, which saves credits. Learn more about SMS contact list management.
Scheduling and Automations
Schedule a mass text for any day and time, or set it to repeat daily, weekly, or monthly. The Campaign Calendar shows every scheduled message in one monthly view, so you can space out your sends.
Spacing matters. Getting texts too often is the top reason people opt out, named by 40% of consumers in the 2026 survey.
Personalization for Mass Texts
Insert contact details like first name into any message. With Workflows, you can also send automatic texts tied to each contact, like a birthday offer or an anniversary message. In the 2026 survey, consumers valued offers based on their interests most (51%).
Delivery Tracking and Analytics
EZ Texting reports show the delivery rate, failed deliveries, click-through rate, and opt-out rate for each message. Use them to see which offers, send times, and groups get the best response. Then adjust your next text.
Is Mass Texting Legal?
Yes. Mass texting is legal in the U.S. when people have agreed to get your texts. Texting people who did not opt in is spam, and it can break federal law.
Rules for Mass Texting
- Get written consent for marketing texts. Under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA), FCC rules require prior express written consent for automated marketing texts. CTIA's Messaging Principles and Best Practices, the carrier industry guidelines, ask for it before any marketing message.
- Honor opt-outs fast. A reply of "stop," "quit," "end," "revoke," "opt out," "cancel," or "unsubscribe" cancels consent. FCC rules require you to honor it within 10 business days.
- Send at reasonable hours. FCC rules ban telephone solicitations before 8 a.m. or after 9 p.m. in the recipient's local time. Some states have their own telemarketing laws too.
- Never buy or rent a list. CTIA guidelines say to build and use your own opt-in list.
- Keep content lawful and honest. CTIA guidelines say senders should keep out content that is unlawful, misleading, harassing, or obscene, and should check ages for age-restricted products.
This is general information, not legal advice.

Compliance Tips
- Text only people who opted in
- Send a confirmation text after sign-up
- Say how often you will text
- Tell people to reply STOP to opt out
- Keep content honest and appropriate
CTIA says the confirmation text should include your program name, how to get help, how to opt out, how often you text, and any fees. EZ Texting sends the required disclosures automatically when someone joins with a keyword. For the full rules, read our SMS marketing compliance guide.
